In rare cases, urns for ashes can be used in case of partial or even complete scattering of ashes after cremation. A columbarium is a place for mass storage of funeral urns.

The culture of funeral urns is spread all over the world and is inextricably linked with the culture of cremation. Urns that have survived to our time were made of a variety of durable materials — metal, ceramics, glass, stone

Eastern Slavs used cremation in the first millennium of our era with the burial of remains both in urns and in pits.

In some cases, the modern funeral ritual involves the use of special capsules as funeral urns for launching mineralized remains into Earth orbit, into outer space, or to the Moon. It is also technologically feasible to include mineralized dust in the composition of specially synthesized artificial diamonds.

Columbarium
In ancient Rome, in the early days, the dead were buried in the ground. From the end of the republican period to the middle of the imperial era, cremation was accepted. The oldest columbariums for storing cremation urns are located in Southern Etruria. Separate monumental tombs – mausoleums (in the early period: sepulcrum) were built for rich people and Roman patricians; the ashes of the poor, plebeians, slaves and freedmen were buried in large public cemeteries (for free or for a small fee).

The largest columbariums, containing the remains of thousands of the deceased, were built under Julius-Claudius for imperial freedmen and slaves (for example, the Roman columbariums of the freedmen of Augustus and Livia on the Appian Way). Smaller structures were built for members of colleges, funeral societies or for individual families. The most famous is the Scipionov Tomb. Columbariums are often found in large cities with a high concentration of population; in addition to Rome, they are found in Naples, Catania.
